Women’s Residential Centre Will Not Be Established In Bridgend and Porthcawl

I strongly welcome the final decision that the proposed women’s residential centre will not be established at either the Atlantic Hotel in Porthcawl or at Sunnyside House in Bridgend.

Since becoming your Member of Parliament, I have fought hard against plans to locate a women’s residential centre within our constituency. I am pleased that the Justice Minister has listened to the concerns I raised with her regarding the proposed sites in Bridgend and Porthcawl.

This was a fantastic effort from the local community to oppose these plans. From the public meetings and surgeries I held with local residents, it was evident that the proposed sites were not in the interest of the constituency. Neither site within our constituency could offer female offenders the support they require for rehabilitation.

I am delighted that the Ministry of Justice have chosen a location for a women’s residential centre in Wales. Swansea is a great location. As Wales’s ‘second city’, it will be able to offer female offenders the support they require for rehabilitation.
