In my monthly Seaside News column, I have raised the benefits of hosting a major golf tournament and how this would boost our local economy.
In 2014, Royal Porthcawl hosted the Senior Open Championship. This brought 43,000 visitors into our area whilst generating £2.16 million for our local economy and a further £5.2 million of publicity for Porthcawl from TV coverage.
The tournament returns to Porthcawl in 2023. The organisers are hoping for a further £3 million boost to the local economy.
This investment in our local businesses and hospitality sector is fantastic for Bridgend and Porthcawl. We must continue to explore what opportunities exist to continue to attract these major events to our area.
