With the news that the Porthcawl Maritime Project appears to have collapsed, local MP, Dr Jamie Wallis, has asked for assurances from Bridgend County Borough Council that the land be protected for future community use, if the project does not go ahead.
Commenting on the recent update, Jamie said:
“Many of you have been asking about the news surrounding the Porthcawl Maritime Centre project, which has been in the news recently. News that this project appears to have collapsed. This seems Primarily from Visit Wales pulling the plug on its funding.
“I met with Cllr Mike Clarke and representatives from Credu Ltd about ways we can try and take this project forward. Cllr Clarke has worked incredibly hard on this project, dedicating a lot of time and effort to the prospect of this.
“I spoke with officials at the Treasury – unfortunately no mechanism to get funds from the UK Government directly in Wales. This was one of the reasons I wholeheartedly supported the Internal Market Bill – as it makes this exact type of thing possible in the future.
“I am now trying to find out from BCBC and Visit Wales, who knew what and when? I have also asked for a meeting with Visit Wales to discuss this.
“I want assurances from BCBC that, if this project doesn’t go ahead, then the land is protected for community use and not used for more flats or residential housing.”
