BRIDGEND MP Jamie Wallis has welcomed the boost to the Welsh economy announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak in his comprehensive spending review.
Wales will get an extra £1.3 billion in 2021/22 including £700 million for the fight against Covid.
This money is available to the Welsh Government to support the economy, improve public services and help people and businesses through the pandemic although Welsh Government is free to spend it as it chooses.
Extra money has been announced across a whole range of spending priorities including many which are UK-wide like improvements to Gigabit broadband and 4G mobile coverage .
Welsh Conservative Jamie said: “Apart from these specific spending commitments, Wales will benefit from the massive increase in defence spending announced by the Prime Minister which will support many companies in Wales within the defence supply chain. Also, the green technology revolution being pushed forward by this government will create jobs throughout Wales.
“It is also planned to set up at least one freeport within Wales as part of our wider agenda to build a new Global Britain trading freely across the world once we are freed form the straitjacket of EU rules.”
Jamie added: “Welsh farmers will benefit from a £240m support package and the Welsh fishing industry will get £2million towards gearing up for when we take back control of our coastal waters and fishing grounds.”
