Bridgend MP, Jamie Wallis, has taken his concerns regarding Bridgend County Borough Council’s plans to increase sport-clubs fees to parliament and has branded them “shameful”.
Speaking after a debate in the House of Commons, Jamie said: “If these increases go ahead, rugby and football teams are looking at between £300-£500 per match, and a cricket team could be charged £27,500 a season for a single cricket square. Many teams have told me that if these go ahead, they will be forced to close, leaving an uncertain future for sports provision in Bridgend.
“This works out to be up to an increase of 500% and one which many clubs cannot afford. We should be doing all we can to improve grassroots sports.
“Keeping active is an important part of staying healthy for children and adults, too. To potentially force the closure of these clubs, who have given so much to our communities, is shameful.
I’ll be fighting this all the way!
